CBD oil is taking the health world by storm. Derived from the controversial cannabis plant, it is being praised for its healing capabilities and ability to treat a huge number of medical complaints. But just how much CBD oil should you take for your specific condition?

When it comes to deciding how much CBD oil is right for you, there are a number of things to take into consideration. Your age, height and weight. Your activity levels. If you are taking any pharmaceutical drugs. All these variables need to be taken into account.

While CBD oil has been shown to be incredibly safe, by observing a few simple guidelines, you give yourself the best chance of CBD oil working for you. It has the potential to be a powerful supplement should you use it correctly. Follow this guide to find out how much CBD oil you should take.

The rising popularity of CBD oil

Every other day there seems to be a story in the press about how CBD oil has cured this or that ailment. Even Hollywood actresses Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow have both gone public in their praise for CBD oil. It’s fair to say that CBD oil has gone mainstream. But is the hype merited?

And that’s what makes CBD oil vastly different from most other health fads and superfoods. There is plenty of scientific research to back up the miraculous claims we are routinely hearing from celebs and ordinary folk alike.

In fact, there has a been a whole slew of scientific studies proving that CBD can be an effective treatment for anything from anxiety and arthritis to diabetes and depression. Add to that list PTSD, insomnia and epilepsy and you’re some way to understanding the excitement surrounding this unique compound.

But does the fact that CBD comes from cannabis concern you? If so, you need not worry. Not only is CBD very safe - even at high doses - it is also completely non-intoxicating. That’s right. You’re not going to experience any mind-altering effects whatsoever. CBD is actually anti-psychotic and even counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC, the compound that causes the ‘high’ commonly attributed to cannabis use.

How can CBD oil help you?

So CBD oil is safe, has enormous therapeutic potential, and does not get you high. But how can it help you?

While CBD oil is certainly no miracle cure, there is reason to believe that the way it works in the human body may promote overall health and balance. This is because CBD seems to work by moving the body towards homeostasis. Homeostasis is achieved when the bodily functions are working in balance. This is the state in which the human body works best in.

How do you take CBD oil?

CBD oil is a versatile supplement. It can be consumed in a variety of ways, each offering their own advantages and disadvantages. Here, we will take a look at each method and discuss its pros and cons.

  • Sublingually (under the tongue)

This is the method that most people use to consume CBD oil. You simply put a few drops under your tongue and leave it there for up to 90 seconds. This allows the CBD to be absorbed into your bloodstream via the soft tissue under your tongue.

Effects from this method usually kick in about 10-20 minutes after consumption. They tend to come on slowly and last for a couple of hours, depending on the dose.

Many CBD oils do not taste all great and that can put some people off this method. Our Good Vibes 250mg+ CBD oil has been flavored with organic peppermint extract so that this isn’t a problem.

  • With food or drink

As most CBD oils have an unpleasant taste, many people prefer to consume it with their food or drink. While this method is convenient, it is not the most efficient as not all of the CBD consumed makes its way into your bloodstream. This is because it must travel through your digestive system and pass the wall of your gut.

The effects of CBD when eaten or drunk can also take a while to come on. Perhaps 30-60 minutes, depending on a number of factors such as how you have eaten and the time of day.

Effects may also be more subtle than with other methods. However, they may last a good amount of time, usually about 1-4 hours.

  • Topically

Cbd oil can also be applied to the skin. When applied in this fashion, the CBD is absorbed directly through the pores in your skin and into your bloodstream. This is an effective method for treating localized pain and injury, such as sore joints and muscles.

Applying CBD oil is also fairly efficient, although effects can be subtle and restricted to certain areas. You would probably need to reapply CBD oil to the affected area every 2-4 hours for a continued effect.

How much CBD oil should you take?

Knowing how much CBD oil to take can be confusing. There are a number of variables to consider when finding the right dose for you. These can include your reason for using CBD oil in the first place, your current levels of health, and any pharmaceutical drugs you may already be using.

This is because, as your mother always says, you are unique. Everybody has a one-of-a-kind physiology and has the potential to reach different to the same dose of CBD oil. While some may be very receptive to a small dose, others may find that a larger dose is required for optimal results.

The main thing to be aware of when finding the ideal dose for you is that it is an individual experience. Therefore, it’s going to take some experimentation and personal reflection to discover what works best for you.

Step 1 - Consult your doctor

As always when adding a new component to your wellness routine, a consultation with a medical professional is advised. Your own doctor knows your health status best and is in a good position to advise you before you start taking CBD oil.

Step 2 - Clear your schedule

Once you have the all-clear from your doctor, clear some time for your first experience with CBD oil. You will want to have a free schedule so that you can take note of any changes you notice in your body.

Step 3 - Start slow

Now that you are prepared, the first time you take CBD oil you will want to start with a small dose. Anywhere between 1-3mg makes a good starting point. Most brands of CBD oil will display on the bottle how much CBD is within, either in mg (micrograms) or as a percentage.

If the concentration is given as a percentage, it’s best to work out how much is in one full dropper. Generally, a standard dropper will contain roughly 0.1 ml of liquid. For an example, our Good Vibes CBD oil contains 250mg of CBD in 30ml of liquid (MCT oil and organic peppermint oil). That means one full dropper of 0.1ml will contain about 8.33mg of CBD. Therefore, a quarter of a dropper will give you a good starting dose of just over 2mg.

Step 4 - Take note of how you feel and increase your dose if necessary

10-20 minutes after your first dose, turn your attention inwards and take note of how you feel. If you feel very little or your symptoms remain, wait an hour or two and increase the dose to somewhere between 3-10mg.

The majority of CBD oil consumers find that a dose between 10 and 20 mg administered once or twice daily is ideal to provide effective relief from a variety of ailments. Having said that, some of you will find 1-3 mg per day works just as well. A smaller amount will need more than 10mg.

CBD is very safe

The good news is that high doses of CBD are extremely well tolerated in humans. Even as much as 600mg has been found to be safe. Not only that, CBD has minimal side effects, no significant contraindications, and there have been zero reported cases of an overdose of CBD.

It is worth being aware that a very small percentage of users have complained of tiredness after using CBD oil, especially with higher doses, although this is rare. Other uncommon side effects that have been reported are headaches and stomach upsets. These complaints, however, may well be down to the carrier oil rather than the CBD itself.

When to take CBD oil

Most people take their predetermined dose either once or twice a day. Usually in the morning and/or evening. Of course, much of the timing of your dosing depends on your reasons for taking CBD oil in the first place.

If you are using it to treat pain, for example, then your dosing schedule will depend on when your symptoms are most pronounced. If you are treating a sleep condition, then the evening is the obvious time to take your dose.  Again, it is best to experiment to find what works best for you and your specific situation.

Summary

When it comes to working out how much CBD oil to take, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Starting slow and listening to your body are the only real measures that can help you determine your ideal dose.

That said, most people find relief with between 10-20mg once or twice daily. This may also be effective for you, although some may find they need much less than is, while some may need more.

There are many variables to consider when finding your perfect dose and dosing schedule. These can include your age, weight and height. Your current health status. As well as your reasons for using for CBD oil. As is always best when starting a new supplement, talk to your doctor first to make sure they have no issue with you using CBD oil.
